My grandma lived with Alzheimer’s for the last 12 or 13 years of her life in a nursing home. One of the activities they would do was painting. I have one of the paintings she made of a house and garden hanging in my bedroom. It reminds me so much of the house my grandpa built and the giant garden she used to tend. I like to believe that she was having fond memories while painting because it just feels so happy.

That painting hanging in your bedroom is such a beautiful thing, and I love that you can feel the happiness in it. I really believe art can surface memories we think are lost.

When I took my creative health course, my professor shared similar cases like elders with Alzheimer's on boat tours to sketch, museum visits where they'd look at art and talk. And the responses were really positive. It made me think a lot about how access to art becomes even more vital when someone is going through health challenges 🙏

Wow, this was incredibly helpful. As a physician entering psychiatry, definitely saving this. I am passionate about helping others reframe aging, I wrote about it my recent post too. Saving your post for future reference!
